Meeting was called to order at 7:35 p.m. by chair Michael Rainville. Motion was made, seconded and carried to approve agenda. Motion was made (Rochelle Prondzinksi), seconded (Pete Gamades) and carried to approve minutes with correction that Rainville will co-chair B.F Nelson Committee with Denise Bryn. Financial report was reviewed by treasurer Gamades.
Motion was made (Jerry Evans), seconded (Meg Beekman) and carried to donate $250 to the Northeast Parade (June 19).
Farmers Market opens June 2; looking for coffee vendor.
Problem properties were discussed. Call 311 about problem properties.
Walking patrol schedule was distributed. Will skip next week, June 19 (parade) and Aug. 7 (National Night Out). T-shirts are coming. Good reaction to group so far.
Schedule of B.F. Nelson Committee meetings was distributed (June 7 and Sept. 6). Bridge work on Main seems held up. Committee will be asking Met Council for funding for park.
Gamades' car was broken into twice; he wrote to elected officials regarding livability issues and has not heard back despite two tries. He is house hunting and would like to know why a person should choose to live in Minneapolis; what is the city's plan for addressing these issues? Alleged perpetrator lives in the neighborhood and has been caught.
Methods of dealing with persistent problem property in 900 block of Second St. NE were discussed. Details to come.
Star Tribune article on foreclosures was discussed. Ron Korsh is on Vacant/Boarded Task Force. There was debate on whether recent state allocation of $11 million was only for North Minneapolis; CM Hofstede later said it was and could not be used in other parts of city. Land Use and Planning Committee met to discuss vacant properties. Will follow-up with meeting June 14 a half-hour before regular STAWNO meeting.
Next Outreach/Fundraising Committee meeting is May 15, possibly at Joyce Vincent's house. Elsie's is booked on original event date, so could move it to Oct. 6 but keep run on Sept. 29.
NRP Review Task Force meetings are May 14 and 17. Looking for people involved in the early days of STAWNO NRP.
Newsletter draft was distributed. Needs to be pared down to four pages. Will be hand delivered. Consensus was that it looked good but needs updating. Rainville will write story for next issue on moving Pioneer statue.
CM Hofstede shared announcements on upcoming Third Ward meetings. City is forming Community Engagement task force. STAWNO's perceived problem properties do not meet the threshold of severity for CARE committee, so these need to be handled differently. Form for reporting problem properties was distributed. Traffic patrol and overall impact on police staffing were discussed.
Best Buy volunteers will be coming to riverfront, including Boom Island area, May 23 to do clean-up.
