Financial report was reviewed by treasurer Pete Gamades. Preliminary financials on fundraiser were provided. Goal of raising $10,000 was met - a 40 percent increase over last year. Thanks to all who helped! Runners this year numbered 240 vs. 45 in 2005. Whole event was less expensive in part because it was not at the library. Final figures and vote on allocation of funds will be done at November meeting.
Farmers Market: Two more weekends. Will review next month.
Northeast Citizen Patrol: John Schulte and Shelley Leeson attended and provided background/summary. Holland, Audubon, Waite, Beltrami, Sheridan, Windom and Logan have walking patrols. They set their own schedules, etc. It's a visual deterrent as well as extra eyes to call 911 or react to perceived crimes in progress; also serves as a social community-builder. Some plan to keep operating in the winter. Some neighborhoods have also started Citizen Inspection Programs.
Eastside Neighborhood Service: Sheila Biernat reported on a new, free social walking group/fitness-related program started by ESNS. Team leaders are needed from each neighborhood. Sign up at 787-4020 or 331-5181.
Land Use and Planning Committee: Superior Plating is moving forward with housing. Task force is forming. Evans and Rainville will take part and report back. May have neighborhood-wide Saturday meeting to discuss. Original idea was 1,000 units; now it's 3-4 towers with 500-600 units. Pollution will likely be an issue. It's listed as a SuperFund site. Question was asked about why Graco is cutting down trees to stump/ground level on 8th Avenue and Marshall. Rainville will check into this. Also, he talked with new district manager for SuperAmerica regarding neighborhood's desire to see 9th Avenue curb cut closed. CM Hofstede is working on getting this resolved. CARE Committee has it on its Top 5 List of properties to look into.
B.F. Nelson Committee: Hats off to Pete Gamades, since a portion of the fundraiser proceeds will help the Nelson site. Also, thanks for Elsie's for donating bartender and waitperson. Groundwork Britain spends $25 million per year on brownfields redevelopment. Groundwork USA is in town now for national convention.
Outreach/Fundraising Committee: NRP Phase I /II were discussed. Handout from city NRP on process used to evaluate Phase I and move into Phase II was distributed. Housing will be 70 percent of Phase II. Need for outreach was noted for Phase II. Review handout and discuss in November; volunteers are needed to get this moving.
Other: Oct. 21 is Third Ward Summit. Bylaws? Still pending. Motion was made (Greffin), seconded (Gamades) and carried to approve September minutes.
Meeting adjourned at 9 p.m.
